The Eastern People of Color History Initiative
Tracking Rose
Mr. Goodwyn and the Eastern People of Color History Initiative tasked me with the initial stages of genealogical research of a slave named Rose. Rose was a slave owned by the Custis in the late 1600s and last showed up in the mid-1700s. Mr. Goodwyn wanted me to collect the documents Rose appears in and find a way to visualize Rose's movement between the Custis family members easily.

Reflection
Creating this flowchart increased my knowledge and aptitude for using digital tools for historical research. FluidChart is another addition to the software I can proficiently use to assist organizations as a student and professional. However, what I walked away from this experience was my first instance of using genealogical research for a historical project. Instead of looking at documents for historical context, I look for familial connections between people using documents as evidence. This skill adds to the depth of my research as a student and as a professional, as it adds another perspective to how I apply research to historical documents. It also allows me to apply additional skills to my research like reading 16th and 17th-century handwriting and differentiating familial titles and names.
