EPOCH Fall 2024

During the Fall semester of 2024, under the Mellon Foundation, the EPOCH internship started slowly by teaching me about the history of the Eastern Shore and the Custis Family. However, once I got enough information, EPOCH began teaching me how to use Notion and compile Custis Documents. Documents that will be analyzed into a streamlined diagram for further analysis for the next semester.

We at the Eastern People of Color History Initiative use Notion to record the deeds, wills, and court orders of the Custis-Washington-Lee family. From those documents, we track recurring slaves and use genealogical research to see their familial connections. I manage the database alongside my colleague Malana while serving as the software manager for the initiative.

Rose was a slave who was passed down in the Custis-Washington-Lee family for 56 years. The Eastern People of Color History Initiative tasks me with the genealogical research of Rose and her different connections within the Custis-Washington-Lee family.
