My Reflection

On this page, I answer questions that reflect on the time I spent at ODU's Special Collections and University archives and EPOCH. Listen, as I reveal what the internship meant to me, advise future interns, and critique the program as well.

As I look back at the Spring Semester of my EPOCH internship, I think the most impactful learning moments were each of the moments were Mr. Goodwyn engaged me to think deeper as a genealogist instead of a historian. Initially, I always caught myself thinking about my research from a historical perspective and not making connections between people through a genealogical perspective. Mr. Goodwyn always corrected me and showed me ideas about possible connections between slaves to spark different ideas for my research. Thanks to Mr. Goodywn's guidance, I can conduct genealogical research for my historical research, making me a more enticing candidate for my future career as a historian. I also learned how to use more digital tools to enhance my research from the internship overall, as each challenge forced me to expand my knowledge about using technology for research.

On the other hand, the most challenging moments were outside the internship in balancing my personal and academic life. I was doing my history senior seminar during that semester, so finding time to research for my internship was challenging. However, I managed to schedule my time out to fit both into my schedule after the first few weeks. However, if I could have changed anything about the internship, it would be asking more questions about the field of genomics itself to learn about possible career opportunities. Nonetheless, if I can give any future interns any advice, I would tell them to find new ways to integrate new technology into the internship. EPOCH loved it when interns experimented with new internet software for research, so bringing something new would not only help the intern but also EPOCH as a whole.
